Course Description


This course is designed to complement the supervisory course and to equip multi-trade operatives with the necessary skills to carry out the routine maintenance, installation and retro-fitting of Fire Resisting Door Sets, Door Blanks and allied components.   

This is a hands-on practical skills course designed to enable operatives to:

  • Read, understand and interpret FRA, surveying and maintenance documentation
  • Develop hand and portable power tool skills to install door sets and door blanks to the required tolerances.   
  • Retrofit Fire Door Ironmongery, intumescent and smoke seal components to the required specification and tolerances  
  • Carry out routine maintenance operations to a range of Fire Door types including Metal, Timber and Composite construction   
  • Accurately record and communicate remedial FR door activities to company requirements

Basic Skills and Knowledge Development relating to Fire Resisting and Fire Escape Door Sets

  • Reading, Understanding and Interpreting installation, maintenance and retrofitting information relating to FR door and Frames   
  • Underpinning Knowledge - Fire Resisting Door Sets-Component Parts - Construction and Performance Requirements  
  • Underpinning Knowledge - Fire Escape Door Sets-Component Parts - Construction and Performance Requirements  
  • Practical Skills Development - Delegates will practice the installation of  a fire resisting door blank to a prepared FR Door Frame to the required specification and to achieve the required tolerances

Practical Skills Development  - Installation and Maintenance of FR Door Components   

  • Delegates will practice the installation of  a fire resisting door blank to a prepared FR Door Frame to the required specification and to achieve the required tolerances  
  • Adjustments and Maintenance Techniques on Metal Door Sets and components  
  • Adjustment and Maintenance Techniques to Composite Doors Sets and components  
  • Fire Door Signage – compliance and suitability requirements

Practical Skills Development - Retro-Fitting Techniques for FR Doors

  • Router techniques for installation of smoke and intumescent seals  
  • Retro-fitting of planted FR rebates to FR Door Frames  
  • Creating and finishing Glazed opening to FR door Blanks using router and templates  
  • Retrofitting and adjusting of door closers to FR door sets  
  • Accurately record and communicate remedial FR door activities to company requirements
